How Amazon Creator Connections Helps Brands Increase Sales and Visibility

In the wake of the social media boom, consumers are relying more than ever on peer-to-peer recommendations. The relationship influencers foster with their audience is one with high levels of trust, which is incredibly persuasive to purchase decisions. As such, influencer marketing has become a key component to any full-funnel marketing strategy.

Influencer marketing on Amazon has been largely indirect through the affiliate program, but with the introduction of Amazon Creator Connections, brands now have the opportunity to work more directly with creators to influence purchase decisions closer to checkout.

When supported by a clear strategy and an optimized Amazon brand presence, Creator Connections can help brands turn creator recommendations into measurable marketplace growth. Your brand can now create targeted product campaigns with stronger incentives to attract high-impact influencers with a more predictable maximum cost per sale.

What Is Amazon Creator Connections?

Amazon Creator Connections is an affiliate marketing program that allows brands to offer higher commission rates to qualifying influencers. According to Amazon, this new method for influencer marketing "allows brands to offer bonus commissions in exchange for qualifying sales generated by content created by Amazon Creators."

This is an evolution of the older Amazon Influencer Program, which allows individuals and publishers to create a personalized storefront including, and individual links to, products for which they receive a commission of sales. Creator Connections allows brands to offer better incentives to high-value influencers for wider market reach.

Amazon Creator Connections Requirements at a Glance

Before you plan a campaign, check that your brand will clear the program's requirements.

  • Enrollment in Amazon Brand Registry, as a brand representative or authorized reseller
  • An advertising account based in the United States, China, or Hong Kong
  • A minimum campaign budget of $5,000, which functions as a commission cap rather than a fee
  • A minimum bonus commission rate of 10%, paid on top of the standard affiliate commission the creator already earns
  • A campaign duration between 30 and 365 days

Note: Amazon has revised these thresholds before. You will want to confirm them in Seller Central under Advertising before you build a launch calendar around a campaign. Blue Wheel Media can help you stay on top of Amazon's ever-changing standards and evolutions.

How Amazon Creator Connections Works

With Amazon Creator Connections, brands can choose to create campaigns based on certain products by ASIN. You set the budget, commission rate, and duration of the campaign. If an influencer is interested, they can contact you directly to request a sample or buy the product for review. They create content based on the product, opt into your campaign, and send it in. Once it's posted and live, whenever they produce a sale via their affiliate link, they receive the higher commission rate set in your campaign.

Creators participating in Amazon affiliate marketing through this program will continue to receive commission for as long as the campaign has budget available, for as long as you have the campaign running.

You have 24 hours after creating a campaign to edit or cancel it before it goes live. Once the campaign is live you can still modify the creator message, the budget and the end date, and you can extend the end date or increase the budget after that initial window closes. Cancellation, though, is a pre-launch action, so treat the budget you commit as money you intend to spend.

Understanding the Attribution Window

Creator Connections runs on the Amazon Associates infrastructure rather than Amazon Attribution, which limits conversion tracking to 24 hours from the initial click. If a shopper clicks a creator's link and purchases within that window, the sale is attributed to your Creator Connections campaign.

  • The catch: a shopper who clicks a creator's link but buys 25 hours later will not be attributed to the campaign, so your reported results run lower than the content's real influence.
  • The advantage: you keep those off-window sales without paying the bonus commission on them, which comes up often with higher-consideration purchases.

The practical consequence is that Creator Connections reporting is a floor rather than a ceiling. Categories with longer consideration cycles will systematically under-report.

Amazon Creator Connections attribution timeline: a click at hour zero starts a 24-hour window; a purchase at hour 9 is attributed and earns the bonus commission, a purchase at hour 25 is not attributed.

How Creator Connections Differs from Traditional Influencer Marketing

Creator Connections offers some different benefits versus traditional influencer marketing strategies.

Firstly, Creator Connections is a self-contained program. You can access all your end-to-end campaign management features in your Amazon Advertising account, with direct attribution metrics that let you see in detail the sales generated by the campaign separate from your overall sales data campaign-level reporting on spend, sales, orders and clicks, so you can see results separately from your overall sales data. That reporting is aggregate, though, and does not break performance out by individual creator.

With Creator Connections, your brand doesn't have to rely solely on direct outreach; the influencers can come to you to request to be part of your campaign through the creator dashboard. As a self-contained system, however, you may lose out on off-platform influence, so this program should ideally be used in tandem with traditional influencer marketing campaigns across other platforms.

Still, in Creator Connections, you can also be confident that the creators working on your campaign should drive strong results creators do have to clear a baseline before they can take part, though it is a low one. To qualify for the program, creators:

  1. Need to have an established social media following on any qualifying platform
  2. Be part of the Amazon Influencer Program already, meaning they must have an active business account on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok
  3. Be enrolled in Amazon's Creator Stars program, which requires at least $1 in shipped revenue or at least 100 link clicks in the previous quarter. This is the entry threshold for Creator Stars as a whole, and it places a creator at the Bronze tier

Finally, Creator Connections functions on a pay-for-performance model; brands only pay for the sales influencers generate. There is no flat fee as there might be in direct influencer marketing campaigns.

Why Brands Are Investing in Creator Commerce on Amazon

Creator Connections offers brands some unique benefits that can influence their ecommerce strategy on the platform.

Like any other influencer program, Creator Connections allows you to have increased visibility for your brand by expanding your audience beyond Amazon itself. While there is a higher rate of purchase intent inherent to the Amazon search model, which can be a definite boost to Amazon-centric marketing efforts, influencer content is frequently multi-channel, so your products are being seen and discovered across the internet by people who might not otherwise interact with Amazon. This helps you to reach new customer segments that might not otherwise be available to you and drive traffic directly to your products, bypassing search.

Additionally, influencer marketing helps build your brand's reputation. Product recommendations coming from trusted sources like a favorable content creator can be seen by your audience as more legitimate and trustworthy than they would be coming from a paid advertisement or from brand-owned pages.

Unique to Creator Connections is the level of control you have over individual product incentives for influencers. You can set commission rates per product at scale rather than having to negotiate these terms on an individual basis, which can be time consuming and difficult to regulate between influencers. You can also offer more attractive commission rates on products that you want to push, whether they're new launches or lower-performing products whose sales numbers you're trying to bolster. This form of Amazon creator marketing provides you with scalable creator participation efforts; you can influence the number of creators you work with by adjusting your campaign settings.

Another unique feature of the program is the level of control you have over ROAS. Because Creator Connections works on a pay-for-performance model, you only pay when the campaign converts, meaning your ROAS is something you can set rather than having to optimize through trial and error. This allows you to budget more efficiently due to the level of control you have over cost. Because Creator Connections works on a pay-for-performance model, you only pay when the campaign converts, which puts a ceiling on your cost per sale rather than leaving it to be discovered through trial and error. The bonus commission still sits on top of the standard affiliate rate Amazon pays, and some attributed sales would have happened anyway, so plan against the cost ceiling rather than treating the return as fixed.

How Creator Connections Fits into a Full-Funnel Amazon Strategy

Creator Connections campaigns are a great addition to a full-funnel Amazon strategy that can bring your brand success on the platform.

Your brand should have a solid foundation in your storefront design and PDP upkeep before you start with Creator Connections. A personalized storefront alongside search-optimized copy and images help your brand to be seen as complete and authoritative by creators and customers alike. But ensure inventory depth as well, because driving creator traffic into a stockout burns commission budget and organic rank at the same time.

Your Creator Connections campaigns can also support more traditional marketing efforts including Sponsored Products and Brands, and Display Ads on Amazon. These features promote your products and your brand directly in Amazon search, exposing shoppers on the site to your brand through specified keywords in a pay-per-click model. The variable ROAS of these campaigns is compensated by the more direct reach and lower budget requirements; paired with Creator Connections campaigns on the content side of the site, they can dramatically improve brand visibility.

All this information can be tracked through Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) for comprehensive analytics that allow you to refine your marketing strategy by exploring the balance between each element and its return.

A full-funnel Amazon marketing strategy can be complex, but you don't have to run it alone. With expert help from a full-service provider like Blue Wheel, you can hone all the moving pieces of your marketing strategy to peak performance quickly and easily.

Best Practices for Successful Creator Connections Campaigns

Your brand has control over a few key features of Creator Connections campaigns and by paying careful attention to certain variables, you can ensure that the right creators are volunteering and you're getting your money's worth.

Set your campaign's duration to as long as you possibly can. From the creators' perspective, content for these campaigns is an investment upfront. They need to invest in or acquire the product, evaluate it, film or photograph it, edit the content, write out a script and other associated copy for their posts, schedule and upload them, and interact with their audience in comments and other platforms. This takes up a considerable chunk of time and resources they could be spending elsewhere. A long campaign duration lets creators know that they'll be receiving commission from this content and its associated links for a long time to come, which adds stability to their business for the duration of the campaign, making it an attractive offer.

Budget deserves more care. Because you can increase a budget after launch but cannot cancel the campaign once it is live, start at a level you are prepared to spend in full and scale up from there. Remember that your budget is only spent when you make a sale from qualifying content and affiliate links, meaning that your ROAS is much more predictable than it would be in a traditional marketing campaign. Your Amazon creator campaign keeps paying out for as long as there is budget, so you'll want to make sure there's plenty available for its full duration.

You'll want to set the commission rate as high as you can while still turning a profit. Initially, if you're trying to build brand recognition rather than simply promoting a product, you might want to set your rate to the maximum allowable for you to still break even. High commission rates make campaigns significantly more attractive to high-quality, investment-returning creators, especially if they're paired with long durations and high budgets.

Finally, put your effort into the campaign brief, because that is where your real influence over creator quality lives. You cannot hand-pick participants in a standard campaign, so you cannot vet your way to good content the way you would in a direct partnership. You’ll also want to ensure that the brief you’re including in the campaign details is as clear and precise as possible when it comes to content and creator expectations. This gives creators ample information when opting into a campaign.

Measuring Success with Creator Connections

The measure you'll use to determine your success with this Amazon creator strategy will depend on your goal for your individual campaigns and your brand. The specific KPI you choose to measure your Creator Connections campaigns should reflect this goal and be a clear measurement of its effects on your products.

Some KPIs you might choose to explore include:

  • Total attributed sales: Is this campaign converting? This is a base statistic that should factor in for all of your campaigns.
  • Creator participation: How many Amazon creators are choosing to take part in your campaign? What tier of creator are you attracting, and is it the level you’re looking for?
  • New-to-brand customers: Are the creators bringing in sales for your product that might not otherwise occur? Is this campaign expanding your market reach?
  • Click-through rate (CTR): How many shoppers are actually clicking on a creator’s link to get to your product? Is this creator’s content effective? Are the creators’ content pieces across the campaign getting traction?
  • Content quality: Is the content being made about your product high quality, engaging, and converting? Are creators putting effort into their work for your campaign, and are customers appreciating that effort?
  • Content engagement: Are audiences actually engaging with the content itself – liking, commenting, sharing, etc.?

Set expectations on attribution before you read any of these numbers. Because of the 24-hour window, your reported results understate what the content actually drove, while some sales that are attributed would have happened anyway. Discount in both directions when you judge incrementality.

Success for a new product launch is going to look different from success for a brand awareness campaign, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Keep in mind that Creator Connections campaigns should be part of a larger full-funnel Amazon branding strategy; viewing them in isolation won't give you an accurate measure of your brand's overall success on the platform.

Is Amazon Creator Connections Right for Your Brand?

As with any marketing technique, Amazon Creator Connections might not be perfect for all brands. So, how can you tell if the program is right for you?

Creator Connections is a great option for those brands who already have an advertising presence on Amazon using their Sponsored Brands and Products system. This program expands your presence on the platform and complements your existing efforts. It's also excellent for brands that have well-optimized product pages and an existing, well-structured storefront (though if you don't have these, Blue Wheel can help you build them up and guide your efforts for maximum return).

Creator Connections might also be helpful for brands that are looking to test out performance-based creator marketing. With a predictable maximum cost per sale, the program is a relatively low-risk way to test this channel. That being said, it's a good option for brands that already work with creators through other platforms and are looking to expand that channel to Amazon's marketplace.

This program may not be ideal for smaller, less established brands. The requirements for joining the program could be too stringent for smaller brands or brands that sell less visually demonstrable products such as everyday essentials or disposable products. It could also be less than ideal for brands who want more complete control over the creators they choose to participate in their marketing campaigns.

That said, you know your brand best. Trialing Creator Connections might be worth the investment if you're interested in expanding your Amazon marketing efforts.

Conclusion

With the rise of social media, consumers are relying now more than ever on reviews from creators they trust rather than brand messaging on its own. Amazon Creator Connections can help your brand bridge this gap with trusted influencers running targeted product marketing efforts. With this program, you can not only build trust with consumers but also with a network of content creators that you can foster long-term relationships to expand your reach for future product launches.

Creator Connections gives brands a new way to connect authentic recommendations for their products to shoppers on Amazon that are already in the mindset to buy, especially those who might not otherwise know your brand exists. When you combine this strategy with more traditional retail media and optimized product detail pages, and measure its success through Amazon's broader advertising ecosystem, it can become a key contributing factor to long-term marketplace growth.
